NTN open source
5G NTN is still in its infancy and is predominantly closed-source. Deutsche Telekom’s EAPs 1 and 2 were conducted behind closed doors, with only one antenna manufacturer and without independent, open consultation. OpenFlare changes that and offers an open reference platform, commissioned by the European Space Agency (ESA), for NB-IoT/LTE-M, GNSS, and 5G NTN (NB-NTN).
OpenFlare: Open Reference Platform for Connected Road Safety
OpenFlare is an open reference platform for battery-powered IoT devices combining NB-IoT/LTE-M, GNSS, and 5G NTN (NB-NTN) founded by European Space Agency (ESA). The platform concept has modular architecture, and an open development approach.
One Platform, Many Products: Reusing the OpenFlare Concept
OpenFlare turns a road-safety beacon into a reusable NTN IoT building block. Its schematic, firmware, and antenna architecture can be adapted for trackers, sensors, and telematics. Â
NTN Bands for OpenFlare: Choosing Spectrum for Satellite Fallback
The NTN band determines antenna size, link budget, and power consumption. OpenFlare combines NB-IoT/LTE-M with 5G NTN for connectivity beyond cellular coverage.
Services around the open source device
OpenFlare will is supported by workshops and training courses. These sessions will help engineers, developers, and product teams apply the platform effectively. Participants will gain practical knowledge of NB-IoT/LTE-M, GNSS, 5G NTN, antenna integration, and energy-efficient IoT design.
Accelerating IoT innovations: From idea to robust PoC
In this six‑hour online workshop, participants develop a robust technical concept for a proof of concept or a minimal functional unit, starting from an initial IoT concept. The focus is on requirements analysis, system architecture, antennas, firmware, dashboards and the cloud. The work is supported by open‑source hardware, the CosmoLink platform and the pragmatic use of AI.
Selecting, integrating and certifying IoT antennas
This practical antenna workshop shows how to choose, integrate and tune antennas for IoT devices. It covers licence‑free PCB, loop and patch antennas, SMT chip antennas and antenna measurements. It also addresses the requirements for certifications such as CE, FCC, UKCA, ANATEL and PTCRB/GCF.
Creating an IoT block diagram in a single day: analysis and architecture
Together, we will develop a viable product architecture from an IoT idea. The workshop covers the selection of wireless technology and suitable modules or SoCs, the coordination of hardware, firmware, cloud and app, as well as an examination of costs, bill of materials, risks and the development roadmap.
Practical VNA and Antenna Course for Embedded Developers
This four-part online course, comprising four two-hour sessions, teaches participants how to use a vector network analyser safely. Participants will learn how to calibrate and measure antennas, interpret measurement results and Smith charts, and specifically design and tune matching networks – without the need for prior knowledge of RF technology.
