Benny Devices faced the challenge of improving the range of their multifunctional IoT hub. Despite full functionality, the signal strength was insufficient for many applications. Our task was to optimise the range without making fundamental hardware changes. Based on the 3D data of the housing and circuit board, we developed an innovative solution. We modified a proven Antennity antenna for 868/915 MHz:

  1. The antenna was rotated by 45 degrees.
  2. Instead of the usual central placement, we positioned it in the corner of the circuit board.
  3. The trapezoidal design of the loop antenna was adapted to the new position.

This unconventional approach led to impressive results:

  • The antenna gain increased by 10 dB, which corresponds to a tenfold increase in effective transmission power.
  • The range of the hub increased significantly.

This optimisation demonstrates how creative antenna solutions can drastically improve the performance of IoT devices without costly hardware changes.
