Radiator thermostat with 868 MHz radio
- Client: Villesto in Germany
- Website: https://www.villesto.de
- IoT application: Radio-controlled radiator thermostat for smart home systems
- Employed radio technology: 868 MHz radio
- Frequency range: 868 MHz
- Type of antenna: Magnetic Antennity loop antenna on flexible circuit board
- Task: Improvement of radio performance and range of the radiator thermostat
- Solution: Replacement of monopole antenna with a magnetic loop antenna on flex PCB
- Special feature: Significant increase in range and improved performance in metallic environments
Villesto faced the challenge of optimising the radio performance of their radiator thermostat in the 868 MHz range. The original electrical monopole antenna showed weaknesses in range and performance in metallic environments. Our solution comprised three core elements:
- We replaced the monopole antenna with a magnetic Antennity loop antenna.
- The antenna design was transferred to a flexible circuit board (flex PCB).
- The flex PCB received a cable connection for flexible positioning within the housing.
These adjustments led to impressive results:
- Significantly increased radio range
- Improved performance in metallic environments
- Flexibility in antenna placement
- More consistent performance during use
The innovative combination of magnetic loop antenna and flex PCB technology enabled significant performance improvements without compromising the thermostat’s design or functionality.
