Benny Devcies was faced with the challenge of optimising the performance of their 868 MHz LoRa hub. The original electrical monopole antenna showed weaknesses in range. Our team developed an effective solution without complex simulations. The starting point was an antenna from the Antennity evaluation kits.
Antenna replacement and optimisation
We replaced the flex PCB antenna with a tried-and-tested magnetic loop antenna from Antennity. Furthermore, the layout of the loop antenna was rotated by 90 degrees. The layout of the antenna was optimised by Benny Devices. The Antennitx team provided support via video call and email. Before the PCB was produced, a design review was carried out. The matching and tuning was done by the Antennitx team. After integration, we carried out a thorough measurement of the antenna gain in three axes.
Results
The result was convincing:
– The range of the LoRa hub increased significantly.
– The customer confirmed 10 dB more RSSI level in his live test
– The bill of materials (BOM) costs could be reduced.
Technical details
The licence-free loop antenna proved to be significantly more powerful than the original electrical antenna. An inexpensive capacitor was added to the chip antenna, which helped to reduce costs.

These improvements significantly increase the reliability and user-friendliness of the LoRa hub. The magnetic loop antenna ensures constant performance. Through optimisation, Benny Devices has not only improved technical performance but also reduced production costs.
